Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre – Beam Detector Installation
Project type
Fire Services
Date
February 2026
Location
Sydney, NSW
Project Overview
Our team was engaged to deliver a state-of-the-art OSID (Open-area Smoke Imaging Detection) system at the prestigious Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Sydney. This upgrade enhances fire safety across the facility’s large open spaces, ensuring rapid and reliable smoke detection even in challenging environments like aquatic centres, where humidity and movement can affect traditional systems.
Our Approach
The project was carefully scoped in line with the engineering design documentation and planned around the centre’s busy schedule. All works were completed after hours (from 8pm onwards) to avoid disruption to public operations. Throughout the project, our team coordinated all fire isolations and site safety measures, maintaining strict compliance and safe working conditions.
Project Highlights
Installation of an advanced dual-wavelength beam detection system offering precise and reliable smoke detection.
Night works scheduling to minimise impact on the operating aquatic centre.
Seamless integration with existing fire systems with no downtime during transition.
Use of high-performance imaging detectors designed to withstand vibration, dust, and steam – ideal for aquatic environments.
Delivered with scaffolding access and safety controls fully managed by our team.
The Result
The newly installed OSID beam detection system significantly improves fire monitoring and safety within the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre’s high-ceilinged pool halls. This project showcases our expertise in dry fire protection and our commitment to providing tailored fire detection solutions that combine performance, efficiency, and minimal disruption to operations.
